Career OS™ PROPEL

The PROPEL Guidebook

PROPEL is the Career OS™ pathway for the ambitious in-role professional: capable, employed, and operating ahead of current visibility, scope, grade, influence, development or reward. These six stages set out how progression is built deliberately inside an organisation, rather than left to an annual appraisal or the hope of being noticed.

The PROPEL journey

PROPEL is the internal progression route, worked in order: Define, Position, Evidence, Influence, Execute, Leverage — ending in progression. The environment is stakeholders, sponsorship and organisational priorities rather than the open market.

One Career OS™. Two governed pathways. PROPEL and MOVE share the same discipline of diagnosis, positioning, evidence and execution, but use different tools because internal progression and external change are different problems.

Career progression without changing employer

Don’t need to leave? Build the career from where you already are. PROPEL is the Career OS™ pathway for experienced professionals who want greater responsibility, scope, influence, visibility, promotion or reward while remaining in their organisation, industry or specialist field.

In-role progression is rarely decided by performance alone. It is decided by how clearly senior stakeholders understand your contribution, how well your impact is evidenced, who sponsors you, and whether a credible progression case exists before the conversation happens. PROPEL builds that case deliberately: purpose and direction, role positioning, outcomes and evidence, presence and influence, execution, then leverage and progression.

The work covers career progression and promotion strategy, leadership development and wider professional development — including engineering leadership where that is the context — as one governed sequence rather than a set of separate development activities. See how this is delivered for professionals seeking progression, within the wider Career OS™ system.

MOVE or PROPEL?

MOVE is for changing role, employer, sector, specialism or career direction. PROPEL is for progressing — more responsibility, influence, visibility, promotion and reward — inside your current organisation and career context. Both run the same six Career OS™ stages; only the environment changes. The external pathway is documented in the MOVE guidebook.

Stage 01

Purpose & Direction

Purpose & Direction is the stage of Career OS™ PROPEL in which an ambitious, capable professional decides — deliberately and in writing — what progression actually means for them before any plan, conversation or campaign is built to pursue it.

Stage 02

Role Positioning

Role Positioning is the deliberate management of how internal decision-makers understand, describe and remember the value a professional brings, so that reputation points towards the level they intend to reach next rather than the level they already occupy.

Stage 03

Outcomes & Evidence

Outcomes & Evidence is the discipline of converting day-to-day delivery into a retrievable, attributable record of impact that a promotion panel or hiring manager can trust without you in the room.

Stage 04

Presence & Influence

Presence & Influence is the PROPEL stage in which validated evidence of impact is made legible to the stakeholders who decide on scope, sponsorship and opportunity.

Stage 05

Execution

Execution is the disciplined stage of Career OS™ PROPEL in which a professional treats progression as a managed campaign, closing capability gaps and generating decision-grade evidence rather than waiting for recognition to arrive unprompted.

Stage 06

Leverage & Progression

Leverage & Progression is the stage at which demonstrated evidence, organisational need and a proposed next-level contribution are brought together into one coherent, negotiable case for progression.

Which pathway applies to you?

If you are still weighing internal progression against an external move, use the weighted Career Decision Matrix to compare the options against your priorities before choosing a pathway.

Many clients begin with PROPEL and keep MOVE as a deliberate option rather than a reaction. The external pathway is documented in the MOVE guidebook.
