Why I Built Career OS™
After 37+ years in engineering, programme leadership and global technical delivery, I kept seeing the same painful pattern.
Highly capable technical professionals were not being held back by weak capability. They were being held back by weak market narrative.
They had delivered complex programmes. Led difficult work. Solved serious problems. Carried real responsibility. Yet their CVs, LinkedIn profiles and interview answers often made them look narrower, smaller, or less senior than they really were.
I know that pain personally.
At 23, I became the youngest manager at Rover Group, leading around 40 engineers. I was delivering. I was trusted. I was getting strong pay rises, bonuses and recognition. But I still waited 14 years for my next real promotion.
Not because I lacked ability. Because I had become too useful where I was. I was excellent in the role, but invisible beyond it. I was valued — but not positioned. I was performing — but not progressing.
The message from a senior engineering director was clear: I needed to demonstrate my capability at a broader level and own a component through to production. In hindsight, I should have moved earlier, challenged harder, or left the company. But at the time, I did what many loyal, high-performing technical professionals do. I kept delivering.
Eventually, with the guidance of an adjacent Chief Engineer, Steve H, I found the direction I needed. I pushed into wider roles, broadened my exposure, and ultimately moved into the senior path I should have been on years before. But I had lost a decade.
That experience stayed with me. I now see the same issue everywhere. Brilliant people waiting to be noticed. Strong professionals relying on hard work alone. Capable candidates underselling themselves because nobody has shown them how to convert achievement into evidence, evidence into positioning, and positioning into opportunity.
