How to Write a UK CV in 2026: Format, Length and Conventions for Experienced Professionals
By Dai Jones, Eich Dyn Career Services Ltd · Published

The short answer
A UK CV for an experienced professional is usually two pages, in reverse chronological order, with a short profile, achievement-focused experience, education and professional qualifications. It normally excludes a photograph, date of birth, marital status and full address, and it may briefly state right-to-work status where relevant.
The core conventions
UK CVs follow a fairly settled set of conventions. The National Careers Service sets out the standard sections; for experienced professionals the practical emphasis is on relevance and evidence.
| Element | UK convention |
|---|---|
| Length | Typically two pages for experienced candidates |
| Order | Reverse chronological |
| Photo | Usually omitted |
| Date of birth, marital status | Omitted |
| Address | Town or city is enough |
| References | "Available on request" or omitted |
| Spelling | British English |
What to leave out — and why
Employers in the UK must not discriminate on protected characteristics such as age, sex, race, religion or disability under the Equality Act 2010. Leaving out a photograph and date of birth is standard practice that keeps the focus on your capability. Data protection guidance from the ICO on recruitment and selection also encourages employers to collect only information they need.
You do not need to include National Insurance numbers, salary history or reasons for leaving each role.
Right to work
Employers must check that candidates have the right to work in the UK, as described on GOV.UK. You are not obliged to state your status on the CV, but a brief, accurate line such as "Full right to work in the UK" or "Skilled Worker visa holder" can prevent uncertainty — particularly for international candidates. See our guide on international careers and right to work.
UK CV vs US résumé
- Length: US résumés are often one page; UK CVs for experienced professionals are usually two.
- Spelling and terms: use British spelling (organised, programme, analyse) and UK qualification names.
- Tone: UK readers tend to respond better to measured, evidence-based phrasing than heavy self-promotion.
Structure for an experienced professional
- Header: name, phone, email, LinkedIn URL, town.
- Headline and profile: who you are professionally and what problems you solve.
- Key achievements (optional): three to four career highlights if your best evidence is spread across roles.
- Experience: recent roles in depth, earlier career summarised.
- Education and professional qualifications: degree, chartership, relevant certifications.
- Additional: languages, security clearance level if relevant and permissible to state, publications.
Formatting for readers and systems
Use a clean, single-column layout, standard headings ("Experience", "Education") and a common font. Avoid putting essential information in headers, footers, text boxes or images, which some systems may not read reliably — our ATS facts and myths guide explains why. Save as PDF unless the employer asks for Word.
What has changed recently
The main change is the wider use of software and AI tools on both sides of recruitment. UK Government guidance on responsible AI in recruitment reflects that employers are adopting these tools. For candidates, the implication is not to write for a machine, but to make your evidence clear, specific and consistent so both people and systems can find it. Frequently asked questions
How long should a UK CV be in 2026?
Two pages is the usual expectation for experienced professionals. Graduates and early-career candidates often use one page; some senior technical candidates use a third page for publications or projects.
Should I put a photo on my UK CV?
Generally no. UK CVs typically omit photographs, which keeps attention on skills and experience. Some creative or performance roles are exceptions.
Do I need to include my full address?
No. Your town or city and a contact phone and email are usually enough.
Should I state my visa status on my CV?
It is optional. A brief accurate statement of right to work can reduce uncertainty, especially for international candidates, but you are not required to include it.
Is a CV the same as a résumé?
In the UK, 'CV' is the standard term for a job application document. A US-style résumé is usually shorter and follows slightly different conventions.
