Traditional CVs and resumes drift steadily towards becoming compressed job descriptions: responsible for the team, managed the programme, supported stakeholders, produced reports, led engineering activity. Every one of those statements is defensible, and every one of them describes the boundary of a role rather than the performance delivered inside it.

A reader can accept all of it and still have no idea whether you were excellent, adequate or quietly carried by the people around you. That judgement only becomes possible once the record shows what moved.

XYZ is a reasoning framework, not a sentence-writing machine. The final sentence can begin with the result, the scale or the action, and it should read like something a capable professional would actually say out loud. What matters is that the underlying evidence logic — outcome, measure, method — remains intact.

Step one

The “So what?” test

Keep asking, out loud if necessary: So what changed? How do you know? What did you actually do? If a statement survives all three questions, it is evidence. If it does not, it is still only a responsibility.

Accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z. Outcome, measure, method — in whichever order reads best.

Quantify everything that matters

How much? How many? How fast? At what scale? Over what period? Choose the measure a decision-maker would actually use to judge the work.

When people hear “metrics”, they often think money. That is far too narrow.

Revenue, cost reduction and return on investment matter, and where you own them you should state them plainly. But engineering, STEM, operations, programme leadership and technical careers frequently hold stronger operational evidence than commercial evidence, and that evidence is routinely left unrecorded because it does not carry a currency symbol.

The decision-relevant questions are wider than money:

How much? How many? How fast? How often? How accurately? At what scale? With what reduction in risk or exposure?

Ten is a good test. It is not a limit.

There is no credible universal rule that a CV or resume must contain exactly ten metrics, and anybody who states one with confidence is describing a preference rather than a standard. Career OS™ uses ten as a practical diagnostic threshold: an experienced professional should normally be able to identify at least ten defensible pieces of evidence of impact across their career.

If you cannot reach ten, the problem is almost never a shortage of achievement. It is a shortage of recorded evidence. For a substantial career, ten is often the starting point rather than the ceiling.

On your CV or resume

Prioritise the evidence that is relevant to the role you are targeting. Do not turn every line into a statistic — a document of unbroken numbers becomes as unreadable as a document with none. See our CV guidance.

Evidence only works if it survives the interview.

Three failures account for most of the damage. The first is invented precision: a figure quoted to the decimal point that cannot be explained when someone asks how it was calculated. The second is inflated ownership: claiming a team, programme or organisational result as a personal one, which collapses the moment an interviewer asks what you personally decided. The third is the meaningless activity metric, which counts effort rather than consequence.

“Attended 52 meetings” measures attendance. “Established a weekly executive decision forum that reduced overdue programme decisions by 60%” measures a change you caused. The first tells a reader how you spent your time; the second tells them what your presence was worth.

Where a figure is an estimate, say so and be ready to explain the basis. A defensible approximation is far stronger than a precise-sounding invention.

The standard is not numerical decoration. It is truthful, relevant and interview-defensible evidence.

Measure the impact without giving away the company.

Much of the strongest evidence in technical careers sits inside confidential programmes. That is not a reason to omit it. Use approved ranges, percentages, indexed figures and public-safe abstraction: “a multi-million-pound powertrain programme” rather than the customer name, “a premium European OEM” rather than the contract.

Do not expose customer names, programme codes, unreleased product detail or restricted technical information. If in doubt, express the outcome as a percentage change and describe the scope in sector terms. Our CV writing guidance covers how to phrase sensitive achievements safely.

Open your CV and LinkedIn profile alongside the dictionary. Go through your career role by role. Ask what changed, how you know, and what you did that caused it. Find at least ten defensible pieces of evidence that deserve to be visible. Ten is not the destination; it is the test that tells you whether your career story has started moving from responsibility to impact.

What is a career metric?

A career metric is a measurable statement of what changed because of your work. It records the outcome you produced, the measure that proves it, and the contribution you personally made. Career metrics turn a career history from a description of occupation into evidence of value.

Does every CV bullet need a number?

No. A CV needs enough evidence to establish that you produce results, not a statistic on every line. Some statements exist to give context, scope or technical range.

Use metrics where they change how a reader judges the work, and leave the rest as clear, factual description.

How many metrics should a CV contain?

What if my figures are confidential?

Use approved ranges, percentages, indexed figures or public-safe abstraction. Describe the sector and the shape of the programme rather than the customer name, programme code or restricted technical detail. A percentage improvement is almost always sufficient to establish scale and consequence.
