50 STEM CV Achievement Examples Across Engineering, Science, Software and Leadership
By Dai Jones, Eich Dyn Career Services Ltd · Published

The short answer
Strong STEM CV achievements combine a specific action, the technical or organisational scope and an honest result or consequence. Below are 50 illustrative examples across eight disciplines to adapt — replace the scope and figures with your own verified evidence rather than copying them.
How to use this list
These 50 examples are illustrative: written for this guide to show how good achievement statements are constructed in different disciplines. They are not client results, and their figures are deliberately generic. Use them as patterns.
For each one you adapt, check three things: it describes something you did; you can explain any number at interview; and it is relevant to the role you are targeting. The methods behind them are explained in how to quantify CV achievements and CV achievements without KPIs.
Mechanical and automotive engineering
- Reduced bracket mass by 18% through topology optimisation while keeping fatigue life above target.
- Led a tolerance stack-up review that eliminated a recurring panel-gap concern before production tooling.
- Introduced design-for-assembly reviews that cut fastener count on a sub-assembly from 14 to 9.
- Ran a supplier capability study (Cpk) that justified moving a critical machining operation in-house.
- Coordinated an 8D investigation that closed a warranty issue affecting a high-volume component.
- Delivered a lightweight structure trade study that informed the platform's material strategy decision.
- Shortened a durability test programme by replacing two physical rig tests with correlated simulation.
Electrical, electronics and energy
- Designed protection settings for a grid connection accepted by the network operator at first submission.
- Reduced PCB re-spins on a product family by introducing design-rule checks before layout release.
- Led thermal testing that identified a cell-to-cell propagation risk, leading to a revised pack layout.
- Commissioned a battery storage site on schedule while coordinating three contractors on a live substation.
- Improved EMC first-pass rate by standardising filtering and grounding guidance across the hardware team.
- Produced the electrical safety case for a new test facility, approved without major findings.
Software, data and AI
- Migrated a monolithic test suite to CI, cutting feedback time on pull requests from hours to minutes.
- Built a data pipeline that consolidated test results from four rigs into one searchable dataset.
- Removed two classes of field failures by rewriting a legacy bootloader with defensive error handling.
- Introduced static analysis to MISRA-C rules, giving reviewers visibility of violations before merge.
- Deployed a predictive-maintenance model pilot, with engineers validating outputs before any action was taken.
- Documented model limitations and data provenance so a safety team could approve limited use of an ML tool.
- Reduced cloud compute cost for a simulation workload by scheduling batch runs off-peak.
Systems, aerospace and defence
- Maintained traceability across a requirements baseline of around 2,000 requirements through critical design review.
- Chaired an international interface working group that closed long-open integration actions ahead of system test.
- Wrote the verification plan for a subsystem, accepted by the customer's design authority.
- Led a hazard analysis that identified an unmitigated failure mode, resolved before qualification testing.
- Streamlined configuration management by consolidating three change processes into one.
- Prepared certification evidence for a modification approved by the airworthiness authority.
Manufacturing, quality and operations
- Rebalanced an assembly line, increasing throughput without additional capital expenditure.
- Cut scrap on a moulding process by running a structured DOE on four process parameters.
- Led PFMEA and control plans for three new product introductions through a smooth ramp-up.
- Passed an external ISO 9001 surveillance audit with no major nonconformances after leading preparation.
- Introduced visual management on a cell, reducing changeover time through SMED principles.
- Reduced open supplier concerns by more than half through a monthly escalation review.
- Implemented a layered process audit that caught deviations before they reached the customer.
Science, research and laboratory
- Developed an assay method that reduced sample preparation time while maintaining validated accuracy.
- Secured competitive research funding as co-investigator on a multi-partner project.
- Published peer-reviewed work on fatigue behaviour in composites, cited by industrial partners.
- Managed an analytical lab estate across two sites, improving instrument availability through planned maintenance.
- Translated a laboratory process into a pilot-scale protocol adopted by an industry partner.
- Wrote standard operating procedures that enabled a lab to achieve UKAS-accredited status.
- Supervised three PhD students to successful completion while running a funded research programme.
Programme, project and leadership
- Recovered a programme stream that was eight weeks behind plan by re-sequencing work and renegotiating scope.
- Built a distributed engineering team across two time zones with a single release and review cadence.
- Managed a project budget of £2.3m to completion within agreed tolerance.
- Created a stage-gate process that gave senior leadership consistent visibility of technical risk.
- Developed two team members into team-lead roles through structured delegation and coaching.
- Negotiated a scope change with a customer that protected the launch date and margin.
- Integrated an acquired engineering team, aligning tools, processes and reporting within six months.
Cross-cutting and influence
- Authored a technical standard adopted across three business units.
- Presented an investment case for test-automation equipment that the board approved.
- Established a mentoring programme for graduate engineers, supporting progress towards professional registration.
Patterns behind the examples
Look across the 50 and you will see recurring structures you can reuse:
- Action + measurable change (examples 1, 14, 28).
- Risk identified and removed (10, 24, 33).
- Approval or acceptance by an external authority (8, 23, 26, 39).
- Capability built in others (40, 45, 50).
- Decision influenced (6, 49).
A varied CV usually draws on several of these patterns, rather than repeating "reduced X by Y%" in every line.
Choosing which to feature
Put your three to five most relevant achievements at the top of each recent role, chosen for the job you are applying for. Our guide to tailoring your CV to any job explains how to select them, and the engineering CV examples show them in context within full profiles.
Frequently asked questions
Can I copy these achievement examples onto my CV?
Use them as patterns, not text to copy. Each example must be rewritten with your own real scope, context and verified results, or it will not survive interview questioning.
How many achievements should each role have?
Typically three to six for recent roles and one or two for earlier roles. Choose those most relevant to the target job rather than listing everything.
Should every achievement include a percentage?
No. Varying the type of evidence — percentages, scale, approvals, decisions, people developed — reads more credibly than a CV where every line follows the same formula.
Are these examples suitable for UK CVs?
Yes. They use British English and UK-relevant references such as UKAS accreditation and professional registration, and they follow UK CV conventions.
